SOLUTIONS FOR LIFE

A dropper is the word that people use to call an apparatus for intravenous drop-by-drop instillation of medical solutions. These simple solutions, such as sodium chloride, glucose, neohaemodes, rheopolyglycin and the like, help medics solve complex problems, of which the foremost is to replenish the volume of circulating blood, detoxify one's organism, and fight post-surgery or post-accident infectious complications. During the Soviet times medical solutions were produced at large enterprises only, but now that new, market relations are being built, Ukrainian medium business is heartily mastering this difficult and laborious undertaking in Novohrad-Volynskyi according to GMP standards and not those that could suffice for this region alone.

Divided into areas A, C and D, "clean room" are equipped in line with all necessary GMP standards and fed with sterile air, which under-goes automatically controlled three-stage cleaning. Time-tested technologies and materials that stand the process of disinfecting were used to build the rooms. Equipment of leading European companies was bought and installed to wash and sterilize glass bottles, cleanse rubber stoppers and aluminum capsules automatically. Filtering facilities of Millipore, Sartorious and Pall enable mechanical inclusions and microbiological cleanness - a must for the producers of infusion solutions, and the sterilizer of Swedish Getinge is used at the final stage of sterilizing products through water circulation. When prepared for instillation, water undergoes multistage purification to become free from mechanical admixtures and organic substances, and to reduce its hardness. The final
two-stage reverse osmosis. All what was said above relates to Novofarm-Biosintez. Its Director Valeriy Pererva consented to sharing the secrets of success with us.

INTELNEWS: Mr. Pererva, the work yon have done impressive. It is hardly believable theat could be done in Ukraine. What incited you, made you sure of success?

MR. PERERVA: The idea of setting up an enterprise of its kind came to our mind due to the shortage of domestically made infusion solutions on the Ukrainian market. We completed the process of registering the enterprise in September 1996, and the enterprise began work in February 1998. It took us great effort to pare a path from 15 employees and 1500,000 equivalent bottles a months to 200 employees and 1,2 million equivalent bottles a month. So far, enterprise has taken up roughly 30 percent of the Ukrainian market for infusion solutions. Our production facilities are concentrated on two sites, of which one is situated on a land that we have bought out. We endeavored to protect ourselves from problems with water, natural gas and supply. We have our own boiler house, two independent network entries. Besides, we have bought a territory of 1 hectare to
place warehouses and a laboratory.

INTELNEWS: Does it mean that a crucial decision and a hard way in the past allow you to rest at present?

MR. PERERVA: Like any other enterprise, we have problems, though viewing ourselves as a trendsetter and pioneer in this industry. The lack of money necessary for the implantation of new medications is one of the most pressing problems. Designing and registering a medication are quite expensive. We seek to be treated as a responsible and honest partner that has an understanding of the Ukrainian pharmaceutical market, is an experienced market operator, knows the structure of sales, and has quite a well-known trademark. Any suggestions concerning joint production of infusion and injection pharmaceuticals as well as syrups, decoctions and res are of interest to us. We chose this market, so we are not seeking to compete with producers of solid medications.

INTELNEWS: All this is very interesting indeed. You have mentioned GMP standards, could you tell about line in detail?

MR. PERERVA; We strive to be quite a modern pharmaceutical company. GMP
certification will become a must for Ukrainian pharmaceutical industry enterprises starting 2009. So, we have taken 80 of the 100 steps on this path.

INTELNEWS: Personnel is said to be the core of everything, so who works at your company?

MR. PERERVA: Enterprise efficiency becomes possible thanks to teamwork. Responsibilities, competence and interac-tion of personnel, which is a direct factor to determine the quality of products are clarly set out and documented in job descriptions. At the same time, one cannot guarantee quality if personnel do not understand their tasks. Enterprise management is interested in seeing their employees not only polish their skills but also gain special knowledge. Ongoing control over personnel education and attestation solves this task.

INTELNEWS: A traditional question - what are your plans for the future?

MR. PERERVA: We have an exclusive medication - polyplatillene (components of ciplastine and DNA), which is used to treat cancer diseases. It is a very humane medication. Many medication designers wish to cooperate with us, offering their technology to us in order to produce medications on our basis. This is about two brand new medications that still have not been applied anywhere in the world.

INTELNEWS: In other words, you are confident of your future, are not you?

MR. PERERVA: It cannot be otherwise. The enterprise is constantly developing -
attracting new resources, broadening the range of products made, improving tech-
niques for the purpose of achieving the best quality possible. All that gives the enterprise an opportunity to hold a worthy place on the Ukrainian market for infusion solutions.
